Goldfinch Gardens is a 3-4 acre production farm in Celo, in the mountains of WNC. We grow specialty vegetables for the high end restaurants of Asheville and the surrounding area. Using 3 greenhouses, we are able to grow and market from March thru December. We also raise Katahdin sheep for meat and have a small laying flock of chickens.
We are looking for interns who can commit for the months of April thru October. We seek those who have had some vegetable growing experience in the past, and are looking to take their knowledge to the next level, especially regarding commercial production. We ask for 8 hour days, Monday thru Friday. We don’t sell at a farmers market, so weekends are free year-round. We enjoy sharing what we know with others who are starting out. Interns need to be in good health and able to handle the summer heat as well as the cool rainy spring and autumn.
We expect a good attitude, lots of questions, open communication, ability to work on one’s own, and an ongoing interest in learning the craft of vegetable production and sheparding.
In exchange for your time, labor and enthusiasm; we have a small straw bale cabin with bathroom and kitchen in it. The sleeping loft holds a queen size bed. Couples are encouraged to apply. Unlimited vegetables, 1 dozen eggs a week and occasional lamb meat are provided . In addition, we provide a weekly stipend. The living arrangement would work for a couple, but would not work for a family with children. No pets please, we have plenty.
Cedar and Ben both work full-time on the farm, and will be able to dedicate a lot of our attention to teaching what we have learned over our 10+ years of farming. Our farming methods are described as intensive and follow many of the systems developed by Elliot Coleman. We expect a lot of our land and ourselves and we hope to pass that commitment to the craft of farming on to the next generation.
